backCement Deep Mixing
State of Activities (From 1999 to 2005)

Major Activities

1.
As a result of revision of the technical standard, the CDM method has become more economical.
2.
“Manual for Deep Mixing Method” is recognized and authorized as the official manual, which was jointly published by Coastal Development Institute of Technology, and Public Works Research Center.
3.
The working group of CDM-LODIC method was newly organized for the purpose of diffusion and improvement of the technology for CDM-LODIC method (Displacement-Reducing Type Deep Mixing Method), which reduces ground displacement while executing in urban areas, etc.
4.
In addition to the existing standard type CDM machine (ø 1,000 x 2 shafts) for land use, the large diameter type Deep Mixing Method (CDM-Mega method) was developed in order to reduce cost and to expand the range of application further.
5.

On April 2001, the CDM Association merged with Column 21 Method (using the agitating blade having 1,500mm diameter) Group, and Land 4 Method (using four shafts operating simultaneously) Group.
Working groups for both methods were newly established within the CDM Association, so that it is planned to expand the range of application for a large-scale CDM process.

6.
Since February 2002, as the 3-shaft model Deep Mixing Method, CDM-Lemni 2/3 has been established and its expansion of the application range is planned by the working group of CDM-Lemni 2/3 method.

Details of Activities

1.
Holding of explanatory meetings for the CDM method
In accordance with the publication of “Technical Manual of Deep Mixing Method with respect to Marine Works” and “Deep Mixing Method-Design and Execution Manual for Land Works”, explanatory meetings or seminars for the CDM method were held in various places throughout Japan.
2.
Execution of assessment for the CDM execution management system
Thorough operation of the execution management system by a new version, unification of the execution management method and improvement of the execution quality are being planned and more reasonable execution is being aimed at. Moreover, in September 2003, the CDM execution management system complying with the electronic delivery system was developed and is being operated.
3.
Publication of “Data for Technology and Estimation for “Large Diameter Type Deep Mixing Method (CDM-Mega Method in Japanese)”
While succeeding the advantage of the existing 2-shaft model machine (ø1,000 x 2), by expanding the improved diameter ranging from ø1,200 mm to ø1,300 mm, large diameter type Deep Mixing Method (CDM-Mega method) was developed. This aims at the improvement of operating efficiency, shortening of the working period and reduction of cost. Brochures, technical and estimating data were published. Moreover, development of ø1,600 mm single-shaft and 2-shaft model was completed.
4.
Presentations to the technical exhibitions:
Nov. 2000 Presentation made at the “Technical Exhibition Corner of 8th Techno-Ocean 2000 (held at Kobe International Conference Center)”
Jun. 2001 Presentation made at the “Technical Exhibition Corner of 36th Japan National Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (held at ASTY Tokushima in Tokushima Prefecture)”
Oct. 2001 Presentation made at the “Technical Exhibition Corner of Construction Technology Fair 2001 in Kanmon (held at Shimonoseki Arukaport)”
Aug. 2002 Presentation made at the “Technical Exhibition Corner of 37th Japan National Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (held at Grancube Osaka)”
Nov. 2002 Presentation made at the “Technical Exhibition Corner of 9th Techno-Ocean 2002 (held at Kobe International Conference Center)”
Jul. 2003 Presentation made at the “Technical Exhibition Corner of 38th Japan National Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (held at Akita Atorion)”
Jul. 2004 Presentation made at the “Technical Exhibition Corner of 39th Japan National Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (held at Niigata Toki Messe)”
5.
Works to develop Deep Mixing Method into an international standard
Since 2002, orders for “examination and survey concerning the designing method for Deep Mixing Method” have been accepted from Port and Airport Research Institute, an independent administrative institution, and examination and survey works to revise the design of Deep Mixing Method are being performed in accordance with the purpose and concept under the international standard.
6.
Participation in and sponsorship of international conferences
The CDM Association is developing positive activities for the future, aiming at the internationalization of the CDM Method such as adaptation to European standard (Euro Code), publication of an English edition of the Technical Manual of Deep Mixing Method, sponsorship of the workshop (Oct. 2002) for Deep Mixing Method, publication of research papers and so forth.
In continuation to this workshop, the CDM Association officially sponsors the International Conference of Deep Mixing ’05 concerning Deep Mixing Method to be held in May, 2005 in Sweden, and is developing positively activities for further internationalization and diffusion of the CDM method.
